National Apprenticeship Week: Mentoring Apprentices at J&B Recycling

13.02.25

At J&B Recycling, we’re proud to play a part in developing the next generation of talented professionals through our apprenticeship programme. During National Apprenticeship Week, we sat down with Ingrid, our Sales and Marketing Manager, who mentors our apprentices Izzy and Lucy, to hear about her experience and the value apprenticeships bring to both individuals and businesses.

What’s the Most Rewarding Part of Mentoring Apprentices?

“For me, the most rewarding part of mentoring apprentices like Izzy and Lucy is seeing them grow and develop, both professionally and personally,” Ingrid shares.

“Watching their confidence build, their skills improve, and their enthusiasm for their roles flourish has been amazing. Izzy has grown so much in her marketing role, developing her creativity and stepping up to lead key projects. She has now completed her apprenticeship and has landed a job as Marketing Coordinator. Lucy is just starting her apprenticeship in customer service, however she has been working within the department since June, already showing great potential with her proactive attitude and eagerness to learn. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see them both become valuable members of the team.”

How Do Apprenticeships Benefit Both the Individual and the Business?

“Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for individuals to gain real-world experience while learning skills they can immediately apply to their roles. For J&B Recycling, the benefits are clear – we get to work with enthusiastic, talented people who bring fresh ideas and energy to the team,” Ingrid explains.

“For example, Izzy has really added value to our marketing efforts by bringing a creative approach to campaigns and projects. Lucy, in her customer service role, is already making a positive impact by supporting the team while building her own confidence and skills. It’s a win-win situation – they grow as professionals, and we gain passionate, capable team members who share our vision.”

What Qualities Do You Look for in an Apprentice?

“When someone joins our apprenticeship programme, I look for qualities like enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and a positive attitude,” says Ingrid.

“It’s not about having all the answers right away – it’s about being open to developing new skills and embracing challenges. Since starting their apprenticeships, both Izzy and Lucy have shown these qualities in abundance. Izzy has grown in confidence and creativity, becoming a key contributor to our marketing efforts.

“Lucy is already showing great promise with her commitment and proactive approach. She quickly picks up new tasks, isn’t afraid to ask questions, and brings a fresh perspective to the team. Her ability to adapt and take on responsibility is impressive, and she’s already making a positive impact. It’s been a joy to see them both develop and thrive.”

Proud Mentoring Moments

“With Izzy, it hasn’t been just one moment – it’s been a series of times when she’s stepped up and shown initiative,” Ingrid reflects. “Whether she’s solving problems, managing projects, or bringing fresh ideas to the table, her confidence and capability have grown consistently.

“Lucy has shown a real strength in working with customers, handling challenges with confidence and professionalism. She approaches conversations with a calm and helpful manner, always looking for solutions and ensuring customers feel valued. Her proactive attitude and ability to build strong relationships make her a great asset to the team.”

Balancing Guidance and Independence

“Mentoring apprentices is all about finding the right balance between providing support and encouraging independence,” Ingrid explains.

“At the start, I give clear direction and resources, so they feel confident in their roles. As they settle in, I encourage them to take the lead, ask questions, and share their ideas. It’s important to create a safe environment where they know it’s okay to make mistakes and learn from them. Over time, I step back more, allowing them to develop their own independence and confidence. It’s so rewarding to see them grow into their roles and take ownership of their work.”

Why Is J&B Recycling a Great Place for Apprentices to Learn and Grow?

“J&B Recycling is committed to providing a supportive environment where apprentices can thrive, allowing them to get hands-on experience, work on meaningful projects, and learn in an industry that’s constantly evolving. Our team is approachable and values fresh ideas, so apprentices feel like part of the team from day one. With our focus on sustainability and innovation, they gain skills and knowledge that will serve them well in the future.”

Advice for Future Mentors

“To anyone considering mentoring an apprentice, I’d say go for it,” Ingrid advises.

“Mentoring is about guidance, patience, and creating a positive learning environment. Celebrate their progress, no matter how small, and encourage them to take initiative and embrace challenges. Most importantly, remember that mentoring is a two-way street – you’ll learn as much from them as they will from you. It’s a truly rewarding experience to see someone develop and thrive under your guidance.”

At J&B Recycling, apprenticeships are more than just a learning opportunity – they’re a way to build a talented, dynamic team while shaping the future of the waste and recycling industry.

We’re proud to celebrate apprentices like Izzy and Lucy, and mentors like Ingrid, who are helping to make a difference every day.
