As part of National Apprenticeship Week, we’re excited to share the inspiring journey of Izzy, who has recently completed her Level 3 Content Creator Apprenticeship at J&B Recycling. Her story is an example to the value of apprenticeships and how they offer a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and build a career in a supportive environment.

Starting the Journey: From College to Apprenticeship

Izzy's journey began with a more traditional route. “I started my first year at college studying English Language, Geography, and Sociology, but as I looked into universities, I realised I wanted to pursue marketing. I’ve always had a passion for writing and English, so marketing felt like the natural next step.”

Initially, Izzy thought university was her only option. However, once she learned about apprenticeships, she realised they offered a hands-on approach to learning. Apprenticeships wasn’t something she had considered before, and she thought university was the only path. By locally contacting businesses and applying for vacancies she landed the job here at J&B Recycling, where she began here Level 3 Content Creator apprenticeship.

The evolution of her role.

When Izzy first started her apprenticeship, her role was focused on learning the basics and supporting the marketing team. “I was mainly helping Ingrid, learning to write copy, taking photos for content, and getting involved in the creative side of things. Just learning on the job has helped me progress a lot.” Izzy explains.

As time went on, her role expanded, and she gained more responsibility. Izzy is now heavily involved with the work we do within schools, tours and in events, such as careers fayres. She also has greater responsibility over the website and social media, now creating and strategising content for the year ahead.

Professional and Personal Growth

Izzy’s apprenticeship not only helped her develop professionally but also personally. “The apprenticeship gave me an insight into what working life is really like, it’s a big jump from school or college to a 9-to-5, but it showed me how important it is to build relationships with your team, who I now look forward to seeing every day.”

She also learned valuable time management skills and the importance of meeting deadlines, which were key parts of balancing work and studying.

Overcoming Challenges

Like many apprentices, Izzy faced some challenges along the way. “Balancing the work-life with studying was definitely tricky, but Ingrid, my manager, and Baltic Apprenticeships were always there to support me. I managed to complete my apprenticeship with a distinction, which I’m really proud of.”

A Moment of Pride: Realising How Much She’s Grown

Izzy recalls a specific moment that showed her how much she had grown during her apprenticeship: “I was heavily involved in the marketing of our Design a Mug Competition’ we hosted, and we received the most submissions we have ever had. This was such a proud moment for me because it showed the campaign was successful through email and social media outreach.”

Additionally, Izzy has seen a huge boost in her confidence. “One thing I would never have done at the beginning of my apprenticeship is speak to students in schools. But now, I’m much more comfortable with it. I’ve built my confidence massively, and it’s been so rewarding, especially in my recent role as Careers Business Champion at Catcote Academy.”

The Most Rewarding Part

For Izzy, the most rewarding part of completing her apprenticeship was knowing that all her hard work had paid off. “Getting my distinction was amazing and the fact that I’ve been promoted to Marketing Coordinator as of January 2025 shows just how far I’ve come.”

How Apprenticeship Helped Transition to Marketing Coordinator

Izzy's apprenticeship played a significant role in preparing her for her current role at J&B Recycling. “My apprenticeship gave me the hands-on experience and confidence I needed, now, I’m heavily involved in the marketing side of the business, and I’m much more confident when speaking to people, especially in schools.”

Advice for Anyone Thinking About Apprenticeships

For anyone considering an apprenticeship, Izzy has some great advice: “Always keep an open mind - there is an apprenticeship for everyone. You don’t have to go to university just because your friends are. If you’re a more hands-on worker, an apprenticeship is a fantastic path to take.”

Looking Ahead: The Future After Apprenticeship

Izzy’s journey is far from over. “My plan is to continue here at J&B Recycling, growing and learning more along the way. I still have a lot to learn, and I’m looking forward to what comes next.”

Izzy has recently been looking to start a degree apprenticeship this September, through a local uni. This will allow her to continue developing her skills while advancing her career at J&B Recycling. Apprenticeships provide a fantastic alternative for those looking to develop their careers, ensuring continued growth and learning while working.
