Annual Waste Transfer Notes Sent to All JB Recycling Clients

Annual Waste Transfer Notes Sent to All J&B Recycling Clients

30.07.24

We are currently emailing all of our customers with their annual Duty of Care documents (Controlled Waste Transfer Note). This is an essential document and a legal requirement under the Environment Act for anyone who disposes of waste.

What is a Waste Transfer Note?

A Waste Transfer Note (WTN) is a document that records the transfer of waste from one party to another. It is a critical part of the Duty of Care regulations set out by the UK government, ensuring that waste is handled responsibly and legally. The WTN provides detailed information about the waste being transferred, including:

- Description of the waste: Type, quantity, and any relevant classification.

- Details of the parties involved: Information about the waste producer and the waste carrier.

- Date of transfer: When the waste was handed over.

- Waste hierarchy application: Confirmation that the waste has been managed in accordance with the waste hierarchy, prioritising reuse, recycling, and recovery over disposal.

Why Do Businesses Need a Waste Transfer Note?

1. Legal Compliance: Under UK law, all businesses that produce, transport, or dispose of waste are required to complete and keep WTNs for at least two years. This is mandated by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011.

2. Proof of Responsible Waste Management: WTNs provide evidence that businesses are managing their waste responsibly, using registered waste carriers and ensuring that waste is disposed of or recycled correctly.

3. Environmental Responsibility: By maintaining WTNs, businesses demonstrate their commitment to reducing environmental impact and adhering to the principles of the waste hierarchy, which prioritises reducing, reusing, and recycling waste.

4. Avoiding Penalties: Failure to produce WTNs upon request by environmental regulators can result in significant fines and legal action. Keeping accurate records protects businesses from such risks.

What Do You Need to Do?

Please check your email for the Duty of Care documents and respond promptly. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

All J&B Recycling clients must sign and confirm that they have received and understood the information contained in the Waste Transfer Note. This ensures that you are compliant with UK waste management laws and supports our shared goal of environmental responsibility.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us maintain compliance and environmental responsibility.
