Fancy dress costumes are a fun way to celebrate various occasions, from Easter and Halloween to themed parties. However, the environmental impact of these costumes is often overlooked.
Many store-bought fancy dress costumes are made from synthetic materials like polyester, which are difficult to recycle. Additionally, these costumes often include accessories such as masks, wigs, and props that are made from mixed materials, further complicating the recycling process. Fast fashion trends in fancy dress mean that these costumes are typically worn once and then discarded, adding to textile waste.
We are sad to see fancy dress costumes coming into our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) as we can’t recover them effectively. Particularly disheartening is the number of children's costumes, often in good enough quality to be reused, and sometimes even brand new. Pictured below is a gorilla mask that gave our quality control team a bit of a fright! Imagine the fun someone could have had with that – it didn’t need to end up in the bin!
So, we would like to urge people to please consider the many other options available to extend their life and usefulness.
1. DIY Costumes from Recycled Materials
Creating your own costume from recycled materials is a fantastic way to reduce waste. Use old clothing, fabric scraps, and household items to craft your outfit. Not only does this approach save money, but it also ensures that your costume is unique and environmentally friendly.
2. Opt for Second-Hand Costumes
Check out charity shops, thrift stores, or online marketplaces for second-hand costumes. This not only reduces the demand for new costumes but also gives a second life to pre-loved outfits. After your event, consider donating the costume back or passing it on to someone else.
3. Choose Natural Fabrics
If you need to purchase materials for your costume, opt for natural fabrics like cotton, wool, or linen. These materials are more sustainable and easier to recycle than synthetic alternatives. Look for organic and sustainably sourced options when possible.
4. Avoid Single-Use Plastics
Many fancy dress accessories, such as masks and props, are made from single-use plastics that are not recyclable. Instead, make your own accessories from cardboard, paper, or other recyclable materials. If you must buy accessories, choose ones made from sustainable materials and designed for multiple uses.
5. Rent a Costume
Renting a costume is a great way to enjoy fancy dress without the environmental impact. Costume rental shops offer a wide range of high-quality outfits that you can return after use, reducing waste and storage needs.
6. Upcycle Old Clothes
Transform old clothes into new costume pieces. An old dress can become a fairy gown with some added tulle and glitter, or a worn-out suit can be turned into a zombie outfit with some creative cutting and fake blood. Upcycling not only saves money but also reduces textile waste.
Once your event is over, consider how you can responsibly dispose of your costume. If it’s in good condition, why not put it away for a future event or mix it up and transform it into something new? You could also donate it to a charity shop or pass it on to a friend for their next party.
For costumes that are beyond repair, check with local recycling centres about textile recycling programs. Be mindful that mixed-material items may not be recyclable, so aim to separate components where possible. Reusing and repurposing your costume can add more fun to your creativity while being kind to the planet!
